Mike McDevitt attended North Catholic from 1978-1982; he played on the Ice Hockey team all 4 years. He was a three-time Suburban High School Hockey League all-star; and in his senior year, he was selected to the Pennsylvania All-Area Team. Upon graduation from North Catholic in 1982, he received a United States Congressional appointment to attend the United States Military Academy. In 2011, Mike was selected and is a proud member of the North Catholic Hall of Fame. In 1980 legendary referee Rich Caplin “told” Mike that he would be a referee; he immediately started as a linesman in the old Industrial League at Face-off Circle. Beginning in the 1993-94 season, Mike began a career as a professional official, working more than 1,000 games, most of which were in the American Hockey League (AHL) & the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Over his career, Mike was selected to work numerous AHL Calder Cup & ECHL Kelly Cup postseason games and was honored in 2009 to officiate the ECHL All-Star Game. During his career, he has attended numerous National Hockey League (NHL) training camps including the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers & New Jersey Devils, and officiated numerous preseason exhibition games. When Mike retired as an on-ice official, he worked at the ECHL Supervisor of Officials for 9 seasons, with half of his tenure as the ECHL’s west coast supervisor.

Mike was selected to officiate at many prestigious international competitions and World Championships. In 2002, he was selected to officiate the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Under-20 World Championships in Austria, the Winter World University Games in Tarvisio, Italy in 2000, and the Four Nations Cup Under-20 Tournament in 1999. From 2004 to 2009, Mike refereed in the Asia Professional Hockey League in Japan, South Korea & China and was selected to work the Asia League Finals each season and the All-Japan Championship in Tokyo. Mike also officiated for the NCAA men’s hockey and worked as a National Instructor with USA Hockey and was invited to instruct several National & Regional training camps. In 2000, he received the USA Hockey Milt Kaufman Award, a yearly national award presented to the individual that has made an outstanding contribution to officiating education. Mike founded and hosted the very successful Philadelphia Officiating Camp each summer with the goal of developing young officials. Many of the Alumni from the referee camp went on to very successful professional careers. Mike continues to referee Adult league and ACHA games in Santa Barbara, California.
