1982 West Chester in Cup Final; GA ousts Haverford

March 25, 1982 Bruce Craig says we still haven’t seen the real Germantown Academy hockey team, the skilled combination of skating and checking that won 25 straight hockey games this year. Maybe not, but what the fans at the Flyers Cup saw last night appeared to be good enough. GA eliminated Haverford, 7-1, in last night’s second game. In the opener, West Chester took a commanding 2-0 lead in games by dumping Arch- bishop Ryan, 7-3. 1982 Ryan, West Chester Triumph in openers of Flyers Cup

March 23, 1982 Vinnie Craven scrambled the Lower Bucks County League playoffs last week. Then he stood the Flyers Cup on its head last night. Archbishop Ryan’s sophomore goaltender won his third straight pressure game as the Raiders blew away heralded Germantown Academy, 7-3, on the opening night of the regional hockey tournament at Penn’s Class of ’23 Rink. Ryan had been an underdog to high-scoring Bishop Egan in the Lower Bucks playoffs, but Craven carried the Raiders through. Now he is helping make them an area power. Ryan meets West Chester at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Class of ’23 rink, and Germantown Academy will […]

1982 Germantown Academy Wins Cup

April 1, 1982 Joe Richter was a surprise choice in goal for Germantown Academy last night. So surprised that he recorded the first shutout in Flyers Cup history … so shocked that he turned back 26 shots and stoned West Chester, 5-0. The victory, before 1,500 fans at the Class of 1923 Rink, gave GA the Flyers Cup, symbolic of supremacy in Southeastern Pennsylvania. However, GA, caught in a scheduling conflict, voted not to go to Saturday’s state championship game. West Chester will go instead and will meet Western Pennsylvania champion Baldwin at 9 p.m. in the Johnstown War Memorial Arena. Five of GA’s best players also play on the Little Flyers midgets, who have qualified for this weekend’s national finals in Manchester, N.H. “We got what we wanted,” said coach Bruce history coach Bruce Craig, clutching the Flyers Cup. “The team voted unanimously not to go to Johnstown unless […]
