1986 Conestoga finally captures big one

April 7, 1986 When Conestoga faced off against Malvern Prep in the championship game of the Flyers Cup last Thursday night at the Skatium, it was an all-or-nothing situation. The Conestoga boys had a 28-0 record entering the game, but not one of those wins would have meant a thing had they gone belly up in the final. The Conestoga skaters, however, were not to be denied. In the three previous seasons, they had made it to the Flyers Cup, and in each of the three tourneys, they had returned home empty-handed. This time around, Conestoga left no doubt that it was the best team in the cup competition.At 9:26 p.m. Thursday night, the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard clock at the Skatium. March 31, 1985 The opening round of the 1986 Flyers Cup has been completed, and, not surprisingly, Conestoga swept through the two game round without a loss. What was a little surprising was the ease with which the Pioneer skaters disposed of their opponents The six teams in the tournament were divided into two divisions. The Black Division included the champions of the three high school leagues in the northern part of the Delaware Valley: Archbishop Wood from the Northern Scholastic Hockey League, Pennsbury from the Lower Bucks County Scholastic Hockey League, and Cheltenham from the Suburban High School Hockey League. Conestoga was bracketed in the Orange Division along with the other southern champs, Malvern Prep from the Eastern High School Hockey League, and William Penn from the New Castle County (Del.) March 24, 1985 Competition in the 1986 Flyers Cup begins tonight at the Skatium in Havertown, and players and officials are brimming with excitement. “Playing in the Flyers Cup is something that every high school hockey player in the area dreams about,” said Flyers Cup chairman Joe Moderski. “The Flyers Cup has continued to grow, both in prestige and attendance, every year since it began.
