The incriminating tapes are hidden somewhere, and Malvern Prep’s Chris Campanale is trying to find them. They show a small child, a skating train wreck heading in one direction, unable to stop. That is how Campanale was introduced to ice hockey. There was a development across the street when he lived in Lansdale, Montgomery County, that had a gaping hole. That hole became a makeshift skating rink. Campanale borrowed a friend’s skates snug-fitting girls’ figure skates. The 6-foot, 185-pound senior left wing has since developed into one of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s most dominant players. April 6, 2003 The skilled senior center is The Inquirer’s player of the year in Southeastern Pa. The high school ice hockey season didn’t end exactly the way Malvern Prep’s Mike Curran hoped. But the senior center still accomplished a number of things. The 5-foot-9, 165-pounder led the Friars to an unprecedented third straight Flyers Cup Class AAA title. He also led the team in scoring for the second straight year. In the big games, in crucial situations, it seemed as if Curran was always there for the Friars. April 5, 2016 ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE YEAR – Tyler Riddle SPRINGFIELD’S RIDDLE READY TO HIT THE ROAD AFTER A STANDOUT SEASON Tyler Riddle hates flying. He admits this as he recalls an especially grueling stretch of a hockey season where he would play 87 games, the same as his sweater number, across high school and club commitments. It was Feb. 3 and his Springfield Cougars battled Garnet Valley at Ice Works. The Jaguars led the game 3-1 and 4-3 before Riddle took over. The reigning Daily Times Player of the Year scored four times in the game, twice in the third period. The hat-trick goal showcased Riddle’s next-level ability. He collected a pass at the Garnet blue line, fought off two defensemen then buried a shot blocker side as he fell to the ice. April 3, 2013 ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE YEAR – Bill Swahl Springfield’s success was built on Bill Swahl’s presence As defenseman, Bill Swahl prepared for the portrait that would memorialize his career as a Springfield hockey player, a sudden wave of realization swept over him. “Guess this is the last time I’ll ever get to do this,” Swahl said as he slipped the gold sweater with the big blue “S” over his head one final time.
