1995 Fall to GA deflates Whippets

April 3, 1995 Nothing takes the spirit out of a hockey team like having a five-on-three advantage for nearly two minutes in a tied game in the third period, not scoring, then letting up a goal 21 seconds later. That’s what happened to Downingtown Wednesday night at the Skatium in Havertown, and it not only sapped the Whippets of their spirit, it also put an end to their hopes of a Flyers Cup title. Germantown Academy’s Rich Podulka came out of the penalty box with 5 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in a 2-2 game, went deep into the Whippets’ zone, and deflected a Dan McDonald slap shot from the left point. Downingtown goalie Travis Sinden waved his glove hand to the side but came up empty, the puck already behind him, and the Patriots were up, 3-2. 1995 Flyers Cup panel proves a little too kind for Lower Merion

March 22, 1995 After losing in the first round of the Inter-County League playoffs on Feb. 21, Lower Merion has had to wait more than a month to play in the Flyers Cup Championship. And now, the week the Aces finally get to play, turmoil has set in. Lower Merion was originally scheduled to play Malvern Prep in a Tier II semifinal game tomorrow at the Ice Line rink in West Chester, but on Monday the Flyers Cup committee which consists of the five high school league presidents decided to change the game to tonight. The reason was that at least five players among Malvern, Lower Merion, and the teams that will meet in the Tier III game to follow Unionville and Springfield, are on a club team scheduled to compete tomorrow night in a regional tournament. Rather than have the players make a difficult decision, the committee thought it […]
