April 9, 1987 Steve Kinsley recalls his freshman year on the hockey team at Malvern Prep. He particularly remembers being impressed by the seniors. “They were real leaders, and I said to myself, ‘When I’m a senior, I’m going to lead like that,” he said. Kinsley is a senior now, and in recent weeks he has demonstrated what a leader he is. As the captain and center of the Friars hockey team, Kinsley played an instrumental role in leading the team to a title- in the Flyers Cup scholastic ice hockey championship. On the strength of six goals and three assists in the tournament’s four games, Kinsley was voted Most Valuable Player. Kinsley, a 6-foot, 180-pound Broomall resident, has been skating since. he was 4 years old and has been playing hockey since he was 5. 1987 Malvern Prep wins Flyers Cup

April 3, 1987 Jeff Spencer scored two goals and Steve Kinsley added a goal and two assists to lead Malvern Prep to a 5-3 win over Conestoga for the Flyers Cup Scholastic Ice Hockey Championship last night at the Havertown Skatium. Malvern, which had lost to Conestoga during last year’s championship, came out playing physical and opened up a three-goal lead in the first period. Kinsley scored first for the Friars, 4 minutes, 13 seconds into the game. He converted a Matt Lannen pass from the corner, beating Pioneers goaltender Scott Graham on a low shot from the slot. Spencer tallied the first of his two goals with just under three minutes left in the period, making it a 2-0 game. Chic Kelly was credited with an assist on the goal. April 2, 1987 Conestoga and Malvern Prep advanced this week to the championship game of the Flyers Cup scholastic ice hockey tournament. In what could be labeled the Showdown in Havertown II, the game, to be held at 8 tonight at the Skatium, will mark the second straight year the two teams have faced each other in the finals for the cup. Malvern will try to avenge last year’s final round loss to Conestoga, in addition to a 4-2 upset by the Pioneers in the tournament last week that marred Malvern’s previously undefeated record of 21-0. 1987 Malvern Prep romps into Flyers Cup final

March 31, 1987 Chick Kelly scored three goals and assisted on three others to propel Malvern Prep to a 10-3 victory over William Tennent and into the final of the Flyers Cup scholastic ice hockey championship. After falling behind 3-1 in the first period, Malvern came back to score nine straight goals. Malvern held Tennent to only 18 shots on goal in the game. Kelly opened the scoring 38 seconds into the contest on a goal assisted by Ron Christy and Jeff Spencer. Tennent answered a minute later, when Ryan Maestas broke down the right side on a pass from Greg Lovern. Maestas skated in alone on Friars goaltender Mike Longo and scored to knot the game. Tennent scored on two more breakaways later in the period, the goals coming from Lovern and, short-handed, from Maestas, his second of the night. March 30, 1987 The Main Line may see a final round shootout in the Flyers Cup scholastic ice hockey championship between Conestoga and Malvern Prep as both teams advanced into the semifinal round last week with wins over Bishop Egan. The two teams won the Orange Division of the round-robin playoff for a berth in the semifinals against the Black Division victors. Conestoga will face Central Bucks East tonight at 7:30 at the Skatium, and Malvern will skate against William Tennent tomorrow night. The winners of the two games will play for the championship Thursday at the Skatium. March 23, 1987 Conestoga and Malvern Prep breezed into the Flyers Cup championship last week by sweeping the final- round playoffs of their respective leagues. Malvern drubbed Haverford High 8-2 in Monday’s second game of their best of three series of the Eastern High School Hockey League to take the title. Conestoga, meanwhile, beat Downingtown 4-1 the same night, then squeaked out a 5-4 overtime win the following night for the title in the Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League. The two teams will compete for the Flyers Cup with four other area league champions in a two division round robin that will also include Central Bucks East, Bishop Egan, William Tennent and Delaware’s William Penn high schools. 1987 Playoff action begins in quest of Flyers Cup

March 2, 1987 The regular season is over in area scholastic ice hockey, and playoff action in quest of the coveted Flyers Cup has begun. Malvern Prep ended its regular season in the Eastern High School Hockey League with a 17-0 record to capture first place. The Friars ended the regular season with an 8-5 win over Monsignor Bonner Thursday to finish with 34 total points. The Friars were propelled to the come from behind victory by Steve Kinsley, Mike Acerba and Al Tedesco, who each netted 2 goals in the game. Haverford High School, meanwhile, took second place in the league with its 12-5-1 slate, ending up 9 points behind the Friars. The two teams earned byes in the first round of the playoffs with their top finishes and will not play until second-round action begins.
