Scott Adams went to and played for the Neshaminy Redskins of the LBCSHL, “Lower Bucks County Scholastic Hockey League. The lanky 6’4 Adams played defense, mainly because the physical side of the game appealed to him, offense, not so much.
Adams’ journey into officiating began in college, due to his physical presence and understanding of the game he learned quickly. “I started to referee to make a little money during my college years and USA hockey saw me and moved me up the ladder relatively quickly,” Adams said. At the time a person of Scott’s stature, size, and physical strength was appealing in professional hockey officiating mainly because fighting was still a large part of the game, and big men in stripes were very much a welcomed commodity. USA hockey shipped Adams off to Lake Placid, and Colorado Springs where he honed his officiating skills. Shortly thereafter Scott was refereeing Philadelphia Flyers intra-squad games in the summer, and then working his way up the AHL, “American Hockey League.”
During Scott’s career, he also worked as an off-ice official for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Adams hung up the skates in 2018. After an encounter with past Flyers GM, Ron Hextall, Adams recalls a discussion in which he informed the former GM he was retiring. To which Hextall replied, “You know, it’s people like you who make this game great,” Scott said. And of course, he remembers how nice it was for Hextall to say such a thing out of the blue.
In all, Adams worked twelve NHL games in the 90’s. Adam’s career highlight was working the 2017 Flyers / Penguins alumni game, he recalls the talent on the ice he was sharing with some of the greatest players to dress for both teams.
He was inducted into the Bucks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2024, recognizing his significant contributions to hockey officiating.
