Ryan Mulhern played high school hockey for the Malvern Prep Friars in the Eastern High School Hockey League, “EHSHL”. Though it was only two seasons, he left an indelible mark scoring 45 points as a freshman in the 1987-88 season, and 78 points as a sophomore, in 1988-89. In just two seasons he put over one-hundred points into the Malvern Prep history books. Malvern Prep

Ryan transferred to St. George’s school in 1989 for two years and graduated in 1991. In Mulhern’s senior year, he accumulated 44 goals and 37 assists for a total of 81 points. He was a two-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic ISL all-star selection and MVP of the Eberhart Division, (I am uncertain what specifically the Eberhart division is.) On top of these accolades, Mulhern was also an all-star and team MVP for the football team.
Ryan was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 8th round 174th overall in the 1992 NHL entry draft. This draft featured No. 1 overall Alexei Yashin, by Ottawa, second selection, Roman Hamrlik, by Tampa Bay, and 3rd selection, Mike Rathje, by San Jose.
After graduating from St. George’s School, Mulhern attended Canterbury Prep for one year, 91-92. In March of 1992 the Hartford Courant named Mulhern Prep school player of the month in Division 1 play. He had 14 goals and 6 assists during that time. He racked up 51 goals, and 26 assists for a total of 77 points for the season.
Ryan decided on Brown University to finish his college education and was enrolled from 1992-1996. according to the Portland Press Herald in Maine, Ryan, finished the school’s all-time leading scorer with 118 points. After graduating from Brown, the Calgary Flames declined to offer Ryan a contract and the Philadelphia Flyers went ahead and signed him as a free agent. From this point forward I’m a little uncertain how he wound up in the Capitals organization but this is where his professional career began.
In Mulhern’s third season with the Portland Pirates, (97-98) he scored 25 goals, and 40 assists and was a first team AHL all-star. He played a total of four seasons between the NHL, AHL, ECHL, and IHL.
