1981 Carroll wins Flyers Cup

March 26, 1981 Jeffrey Arnold clinched the Flyers Cup last night, scoring five goals and setting a record with 17 in the four- game series, as defending champion Archbishop Carroll humiliated Haverford, 9-0, at Penn’s Class of ’23 Rink Carroll thus successfully defended the Cup, and its goaltenders, Rob Schnorr and backup Tom McCullough, shared the first shutout in the Cup’s two-year history. Arnold won the Bobby Clarke Award, symbolic of the most valuable player in the series, by breaking the record of last year’s award winner, former teammate Scott Chamness. Chamness, now at Canterbury (Conn.) Prep School, had scored 13 goals last year to win the award, getting a hat trick in each of the four games. March 24, 1981 The Flyers Cup preliminary rounds confirmed what most hockey people had long suspected – Archbishop Carroll is in a league by itself. Unfortunately for the Patriots, however, they’ll have to come back to the Penn rink again tomorrow night to prove it, before they can claim the Cup. Again. The defending Flyers Cup champions moved through the round-robin preliminaries with a record of 3-0, easily defeating Inter-County League rival Haverford, 7-3, last night. Haverford also advances to tomorrow’s final (8:15 p.m. at the Class of 1923 Rink, 32d and Walnut Streets) after Cup officials sifted through a complicated tie-breaking procedure. After Germantown Academy had dusted off Bishop Egan, 8-5, and missed qualifying for the final round by one goal, Carroll and Haverford faced off for the fifth time this season. March 18, 1981 Bishop Egan threw the Flyers Cup into confusion last night, riding Vince McNamee’s four goals to a 6-5 upset of favored Haverford, and creating the possibility that tie-breakers will be needed after Monday’s final round-robin preliminaries. In the first game at the Penn rink last night, defending champion Archbishop Carroll got five goals. from red-hot Jeffrey Arnold to dump Germantown Academy, 6-4, despite a hat trick by GA freshman John Hopkinson. After two rounds, Carroll is 2-0, Haverford and Egan each are 1-1, and Germantown Academy is 0-2. The top two teams after Monday’s double- header advance to Wednesday’s final. March 17, 1981 Archbishop Carroll grabbed the Flyers Cup by the throat last night. The Cup is still alive, but squirming. The defending champions scored a Cup-record 10 goals, defeating Bishop Egan, 10-3, at Penn. Phil Chamness set a record with seven assists, and linemate Jeff Arnold tied a record with five goals. The two now share the record for points in a game with eight each. In last night’s second game, Haverford defeated Germantown Academy, 6-4. Tonight’s second date of the round-robin portion of the tournament has Carroll meeting GA at 7 o’clock and Haverford meeting Egan at 9. The Carroll victory was enlivened by the presence of former star Greg Arnold behind the bench. This was significant because Arnold is an 18-year-old senior at Canterbury (Conn.)
