Caufield was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was raised in the Towamencin Township, Pennsylvania, area about a mile outside Lansdale borough. He played for and graduated from North Penn High School. Caufield was noticeably the largest player on the North Penn Knights ice hockey team, however, hockey wasn’t his first sport, he also played football and was a standout player.
North Penn Knights 1979
Jay attended the University of North Dakota where he played football. Jay played a grand total of one hockey game for North Dakota as an emergency substitute. Players informed the coaching staff of Jay’s previous playing experience and he was asked to play. The rest is history as a New York Rangers scout was in attendance and had immediate interest. Jay later signed with the organization and his NHL career took off from there. Jay remained in the Rangers organization until the 87-88 season before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Caufield won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in the 91-92 season and played out the remainder of his career in Pittsburgh. After retirement Jay became a personal trainer most notably for former teammate Mario Lemieux, working with him to make his comeback after a 3-year IR layoff to treat Hodgkin’s disease. Jay later became an NHL analyst and works with the Penguins for their pre-, and post-game reports.
