1993 L.V. Hockey League Looks to Flyers Cup in 1993-94

March 4, 1993 This year, the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League is on probation, but it’s not the kind of probation National Hockey League regulars like Bob Probert or Tie Domi earn. The LVSHL is on a one-year probation toward prestige. If the 3-year-old league’s 11 teams play competitively and cleanly (read as no gooning allowed) in cross-league games for the remainder of the year, they will have reached the pinnacle of Philadelphia-area hockey prestige for 1993-94. League teams will be eligible for Flyers Cup competition. “We are definitely eligible for next year,” said Larry Wheatley, coach of Pennridge and one of the organizers of the LVSHL. “Like anything else you join, you’re on probation for a year. “We’ve already been accepted for next season. We just have to go through our probation year without a hitch, an altercation, or other problems.” The local league, which plays out of the […]

1993 Bonner captures cup again!

April 12, 1993 Germantown Academy made it’s best effort, but the 3-2 lost ended its quest for the Flyers Cup Germantown Academy saved its very best for last despite a 3-2 loss to Monsignor Bonner last Monday night in the Flyers Cup Class AAA championship finals at the Skatium in Havertown. The defeat ended a glorious season for the Patriots. “There is no doubt in my mind that the last game was the best game we played all season,” Germantown Academy coach John Ioia said. “A bounce here or there and we beat the best team in the area. 1993 Brawl, loss end Downingtown season on an ugly note

April 1, 1993 All the frustration Downingtown endured this season against archrival Monsignor Bonner came to an ugly pinnacle Tuesday night when the Whippets lost their Flyers Cup semi-final game to the Friars, 4-1. The Whippets missed a chance to advance to the finals and suffered their fourth loss in six meetings with Bonner this season, the game was called with 18 seconds remaining as a brawl broke out at mid-ice. Downingtown’s Kurt Bassett initiated the fracas by wrestling down Bonner’s Mike Jacobs, allegedly in retaliation for a butt-end earlier in the game. Bassett’s brother, Scott, then joined the fray, followed by just about all the other players on the ice at the time. By the time the on-ice fighting was stopped, it had spread to the stands, and Skatium personnel tried to eject a few of the more boisterous fans. Another series of fights ensued, and police on hand […]

March 22, 1993 Germantown Academy also goes to the tourney despite losing in the Suburban League final. William Tennent and Germantown Academy have reached what their coaches call their “ultimate” destination: the Flyers Cup hockey tournament. Both will compete in the quarterfinal series this week. Tennent won its fourth Suburban High School Hockey League championship in five years Thursday with a 5-3 victory over Germantown Academy at the Face-Off Circle in Warminster. “Our ultimate goal is to win the Flyers Cup, but winning the league championship was nice,” coach Joe Paul said of his Panthers, who beat the Patriots, 2-1, in the three-game league championship series. “I had to admit, a smile crossed my face when the game was over.” The smile might not have been evident on GA coach John Ioia’s face, but the hope of a Class AAA Flyers Cup title is very much on his mind. “We […]
