1985 Flyers Cup

1985 Flyers Cup is off to an exciting start

March 24, 1985 What a wild and exciting time it was in the world of area scholastic ice hockey last week. The week, which started with the end of the various leagues’ playoffs and ended with the start of the Flyers Cup, featured the crowning of three league playoff champions. The Eastern High School Hockey League (EHSHL) began the championship series of its postseason play- offs last Monday at the Skatium in Havertown with Malvern Prep and Haverford High playing the opening game of a best-of-three series. The Malvern Friars entered the game as undefeated regular-season champs. Haverford High, mean- while, arrived as the league’s runner-up and also held the distinction of being the only team to tie the Friars this season. The Malvern skaters were the favorites, if only by a slight margin. However, the Fords outplayed Malvern Prep at both ends of the ice. And they not only […]

1985 It’s Conestoga vs. Cherry Hill for Flyers Cup

April 1, 1985 In one of his on-screen narratives, German filmmaker Werner Herzog remarked, “Everyday life is just an illusion beyond which lies the reality of dreams.” The players of the Conestoga ice hockey team can relate to that quote right about now. Tonight, at the Skatium in Havertown, the Conestoga boys will be looking to abandon everyday life and turn their dreams into reality. Tonight, at the Skatium, the Conestoga skaters face the Cougars of Cherry Hill East for the 1985 Flyers Cup. The last two years, Conestoga made it to the Flyers Cup (the annual scholastic ice hockey postseason competition that matches the four Delaware Valley league champions in a showdown for the coveted cup) in pursuit of the dream, and both times the boys from the Berwyn school were hurled back into reality with two straight losses. This year’s Conestoga team, the champion of the Intercounty Scholastic […]

1985 East bidding for Flyers Cup

March 30, 1985It has been a long climb to the top for the Cherry Hill East hockey team. The Cougars have survived such drawbacks as no available practice facility, an hour drive to the nearest rink for games, the anonymity that comes from being a club and not a varsity team, and such indignities as being kept out of the Flyers Cup two years ago by virtue of their home in South Jersey. Despite the drawbacks, the Cougars are within one win of capturing the sixth Flyers Cup, the regional scholastic hockey tournament that will wind up Monday night. Cherry Hill East will meet Cones- toga in the Flyers Cup championship game. The game is in the Skatium in Havertown, with face-off at 8 p.m. Since East was kept out of the Cup two years ago, a victory Monday would be the greatest kind of vindication. The Cougars (and Bishop […]
