1988 – Seasons end for four area teams at playoffs

March 31, 1988 The word meltdown took on a new meaning this week when, in the span of 24 hours, all four area ice hockey teams competing in postseason play suffered losses that put an end to their seasons. The most surprising losses came on successive nights at the Havertown Skatium during the Flyers Cup Championship semifinals. On Monday, Conestoga was eliminated from the tournament by a 4-3 loss in overtime to Council Rock, and the following night saw defending champion Malvern Prep ousted in a 4-3 upset by Bishop Egan. In the Inter-County League’s President’s Cup tournament at the General Washington Rink, Archbishop Carroll fell to Downingtown, 12-4, in a semifinal game Tuesday, and Lower Merion lost in the semifinals the same night to West Chester East, 7-3, putting an abrupt end to both their seasons. 1988 William Tennent takes President’s Cup, Council Rock eliminates Wood

March 28, 1988 There was good news and bad news out of the Northern Scholastic Hockey League. The bad news was that league champion Archbishop Wood was ousted from the prestigious Flyers Cup tournament at the Havertown Skatium last week. The good news was that the NSHL’s second-place finisher, William Tennent, captured the President’s Cup The Flyers Cup tournament is the high school hockey equivalent of college basketball’s NCAA tournament with the best hockey teams from the Philadelphia area participating. The President’s Cup is like the NIT, where the league’s second-place finishers are showcased. Wood, bracketed in the Orange Division along with Suburban Hockey League champion Council Rock and Lower Bucks County League champion Bishop Egan, opened the Flyers Cup tournament with a 6-3 loss to Council Rock on Monday night. 1988 Council Rock Advances to Flyers Cup Games

March 21, 1988 Council Rock swept a two-game Suburban Hockey League championship series with Central Bucks last week to advance to the 1988 Flyers Cup Scholastic Championship. The Indians will face Northern Scholastic Hockey League champion Archbishop Wood tonight at 9:15, in the second game of a round robin doubleheader at the host site of all Flyers Cup games, the Haverford Skatium. In the 7:30 p.m. opening game, Inter County Scholastic Hockey League champion Conestoga will play defending Flyers Cup champion Malvern Prep from the Eastern High School Hockey League. On Wednesday, play continues at 7:30 p.m. as Wood meets the champion of the Lower Bucks County Scholastic League Bishop Egan.
