1979 Eastern Regional Tourney

1979 Just out of the hospital, Washco leads Malvern in Area hockey tourney, 9-6

April 11, 1979 “Give me six kids like Albert and we’d never lose,” said Malvern Coach Ray Bowman.” Al Washco had an emergency appendectomy two weeks ago. Usually, that’s reason enough to take time off from school and recuperate, maybe catching a few Flyers games on television. But Washco not only played hockey last night, he scored a three-goal hat trick to lead Malvern Prep past Archbishop Wood, 9-6, in the second round of the Southeast Pennsylvania regional tournament.Wood was eliminated after two straight losses. Malvern, a 7-1 victim of Archbishop Ryan Monday night, plays on. “It’s just desire to play,” said Washco, an amazing 5-foot, 2-inch freshman who is all heart. “In the hospital, you just sit around and do nothing. Last Thursday we were playing O’Hara and my mother and my mother wouldn’t even let me go to watch. I was going nuts.”I skated twice Friday, twice Satur- […]

1979 Scott Chamness: The best on the ice

March 22, 1979 The greatest scorer in area hockey history – Scott Chamness of Archbishop Carroll High School – Heads the third annual Inquirer All-Area team. With shifty moves and a great shot, Chamness is one of the best scholastic players in the Middle Atlantic States. His scoring totals border on incredible and have earned him nationwide attention. The 5-foot, 11-inch, 170-pound junior scored 89 goals in just 17 games to shatter all local scoring records. He added 45 assists and 134 points to earn a unanimous selection to the team. Joining Chamness is linemate Greg Arnold, who skates effortlessly and is a dangerous scorer; deceptive forward Erik Ginkinger of Cheltenham; workhorse defenseman Eric Girardi of Germantown Academy; hard-hitting, power-shooting defenseman Rick Brosious of Lower Merion; and heady goaltender Dave Rominiecki of Archbishop Ryan. “I developed my shot with a lot of practice shooting,” Chamness said. “I do a lot […]

1979 William Tennent wants ice hockey title

April 27, 1979 For the second time in two years fighting has hampered the Archbishop Carroll team in its quest for a championship in the sport of ice hockey. The innocent bystander this time was William Tennent, getting word late Thursday that the Carroll team voted to forfeit it’s game with the Panthers which was originally scheduled for 9:30 Thursday night. Because of Tuesday night’s all-out brawl with Archbishop Ryan, the Lower Bucks League champions, five Carroll players were suspended along with coach Gary Vetre, whose only crime impersonating a Woody Hayes and going out on the ice to slug a Ryan player, Dennis Harrison, did not do his impression of a punch bag instead pummeled Vetre repeatedly for what seemed like several minutes before being pulled away. The triumvirate which rules scholastic hockey in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Andy Richards (Suburban League), Charlie Judge (Lower bucks) and Jack Hunt (Inter-County) could […]

1979 Malvern Prep stuns Tennent icemen by 6-5 score

April 25, 1979 One of the biggest upsets of the scholastic hockey year occurred at the Face Off Circle in Warminster when Malvern Prep, the third-place team in the Inter-County League during the season, shocked perennial Suburban League power William Tennent, 6-5, on Tuesday night. But that startling development pales by comparison to what happened in the first game between Archbishop Carroll and Archbishop Ryan, particularly when the future of interleague play may hang in the balance. With less than a minute to go in the first game, a knock-down, drag out fight broke out between Ryan, the Lower Bucks League champions, and Carroll, the Inter-County champions. It raged out of control for several minutes and, at one point, the coach of the Carroll team, Gary Vetre, did his impression of Woody Hayes and slugged a Ryan player. Carroll won the game, 7-1, but the bottom line is that […]
