Matt Mulhern played high school hockey for the Malvern Prep Friars. Following in his brother Ryan’s footsteps, Matt played only his freshman, and sophomore years for the school. Like his brothers Rob, and Ryan, Matt wore the Mulhern number thirteen carrying on the family legacy at Malvern Prep. During his two years at Prep, the Friars won the EHSHL championship and went onto the Flyers Cup Finals in Class AAA, and Class AA back-to-back against the Council Rock Indians, in both instances the Friars were runners-up. And like his brothers before him, Matt was among the team and league leaders in points scored.
Malvern Prep highlights from 1991 and 1992
Matt would transfer to Canterbury Prep to complete his high school education beginning in the fall of 1992. Over the course of those two years, Mulhern contributed to the success of the school’s hockey program. Just like his brother Ryan, Matt would become the team’s leading scorer by his junior year. Among other things, Matt also played for Canterbury’s baseball team where he also excelled as a two-sport athlete.
In 1995 Matt began his education at Boston College. Over the course of four years, Matt completed his career with the Eagles as the eleventh-highest scorer in team history, (1999). In September of 99′ Matt was invited to Portland Pirates training camp where he’d have an opportunity to show off his skills, and while not under contract the possibility of making the team was slim. But the fact that he was in the same pro camp skating with older brother Ryan was something they would both relish for life. “Having the opportunity to skate together again made me feel young again said, Ryan.”
Mulhern went on to play two years professionally for the Jackson Bandits in the Chicago Blackhawks organization, and finally for the Charlotte Checkers, whose parent organization at the time was the New York Rangers.
