2002 Radnor reaches Flyers Cup final

March 28, 2002 WEST GOSHEN – Anyone who has witnessed a Radnor game this season can attest that the John Brennan-Chris Brennan-Ed Devine line supplies most of the Red Raiders’ scoring. Last Monday night, however. Radnor ousted Cedar Cliff 13-0 in a Flyers Cup Class A semifinal game that displayed all of the Red Raiders’ weapons. The Red Raiders will now face Eastern Regional (N.J.). which defeated Central Bucks East 3-0 Monday night. The contest will be for the Flyers Cup championship and will take place at Face Off Circle in Warminster on Wednesday (7 p.m.) in a game that was played after The Suburban went to press. Radnor has already clinched a berth in the Pennsylvania championship game against Serra Catholic, the Penguins Cup winner. “We have a lot of depth on our team,” said Red Raiders forward Austin Cohen, who had a goal and two assists. “The Brennans […]

2002 Malvern solves GA goaltender to win 2nd straight Flyers Cup

March 29, 2002 Malvern Prep was starting to wonder what it was going to take to get the puck past tiny Germantown Academy goaltender Luis Perez last night. But the Friars eventually broke through and beat the Patriots, 2-0, at the First Union Spectrum to win the Flyers Cup Class AAA championship. It was the second straight title for Malvern Prep, which became the first team to win five Class AAA titles in the 23-year history of the prestigious high school ice hockey tournament. The Friars (27-3-1) will play defending state champion Bethel Park tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Rostraver Ice Gardens in Belle Vernon in a rematch of last year’s state Class AAA championship. The valiant Patriots, who have skated with just nine players most of this season, finished 24-12-3. The game was entirely different from the teams’ first meeting this season, when Malvern crushed GA, 9-0, on Nov. […]

March 28, 2002 The Red Raiders toasted Eastern, 7-2, for the A crown. They will play for a state championship. Radnor won its first Flyers Cup title last night with a 7-2 thumping of Eastern at the Face-Off Circle in Warminster. The victory gave Radnor (24-1) the Class A title. Eastern, located in Voorhees, completed its season 8-9-1. Radnor already had an automatic berth into the Pennsylvania state championship game because Eastern competes in New Jersey. The Red Raiders will play two-time and defending state champion Serra Catholic, of McKeesport, at noon Saturday at Rostraver Ice Gardens in Belle Vernon, Pa., for the Class A state crown. 2016 All-Delco Teams

April 5, 2016 ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE YEAR – Tyler Riddle SPRINGFIELD’S RIDDLE READY TO HIT THE ROAD AFTER A STANDOUT SEASON Tyler Riddle hates flying. He admits this as he recalls an especially grueling stretch of a hockey season where he would play 87 games, the same as his sweater number, across high school and club commitments. It was Feb. 3 and his Springfield Cougars battled Garnet Valley at Ice Works. The Jaguars led the game 3-1 and 4-3 before Riddle took over. The reigning Daily Times Player of the Year scored four times in the game, twice in the third period. The hat-trick goal showcased Riddle’s next-level ability. He collected a pass at the Garnet blue line, fought off two defensemen then buried a shot blocker side as he fell to the ice. The Cougars eventually skated away with a 7-4 victory. The next morning Riddle was on […]

2013 All-Delco Teams

April 3, 2013 ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE YEAR – Bill Swahl Springfield’s success was built on Bill Swahl’s presence As defenseman, Bill Swahl prepared for the portrait that would memorialize his career as a Springfield hockey player, a sudden wave of realization swept over him. “Guess this is the last time I’ll ever get to do this,” Swahl said as he slipped the gold sweater with the big blue “S” over his head one final time. The privilege of being part of one of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s premier hockey programs isn’t lost on the senior. And Swahl has given back every bit as much as he’s gotten from the Cougars. “The program was, I thought, very strong when I came in,” Swahl said. “I was kind of intimidated by the upperclassmen and I was nervous to see if I would make the team. I did, and as the years went […]
