The 1989-90 season did not begin well for the Episcopal Academy ice hockey team. In sloshing along to a 1-8-1 start, the Churchmen struggled to put points on the board and were almost defenseless in shutting down the opposition.
But coach Bruce Stone found a steadying force in the nets: Senior goaltender Jason Avicolli has helped turn around the team’s fortunes.
Avicolli, The Inquirer’s suburban athlete of the week, posted two shutouts last week (a 5-0 win over Marple Newtown and a scoreless tie with St. James) to run his unbeaten streak to eight games.
Over the last five games, the team captain has recorded three shutouts and allowed just five goals while facing 110 shots, boosting Episcopal to 6-8-3 in the Eastern League and 6-8-4 overall.
