Josh Friday is hot, scoring and setting up goals for the West Chester Henderson ice hockey team. Through seven games so far, he has 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points, third-best in the Inter-County Scho- lastic Hockey League.
But, according to Josh’s father and coach, Bob Friday, the Henderson sophomore is only “semi-hot.”
“He’s playing well, but I’ve seen him get into streaks when anything he shoots will go in,” Bob Friday said. “It’s kind of like a hitter’s groove in baseball. He’s doing well, but he can do even better.”
Friday had 3 goals and 4 assists in the Warriors’ 9-3 victory over Harri- ton on Jan. 22, a win that improved the team’s record to 2-3-2.
Friday, a defenseman who also competes in varsity track and soccer, is the on-ice leader of the Henderson team, along with center Chris Cronan. The two have accounted for more than 75 percent of the team’s goals, the coach said. “Josh has a combination of speed, stickhandling ability, and a kind of innate sense of when to make the move. He’s pretty much got a green light, but I like him to pick his spots,” Bob Friday said.
On defense, Josh Friday functions as the team’s quarterback, running the offense and challenging the other team’s offense.
“I like to have him back there so he has the whole game in front of him so he can see what’s going on,” Bob Friday said. “A defenseman doesn’t go end to end like a forward unless he’s rushing the net. Therefore, he can stay on the ice longer. And with our lack of quality depth, I want to keep Josh on the ice as long as possible.”
