Monsignor Bonner hadn’t played an ice hockey game in two weeks going into its best-of-three semifinal series with Haverford High on March 5. And before one period was finished, the Friars were in a 2-goal hole.
Then senior co-captain Mike Hennessey scored three goals to tie the game, 3-3, going into the third period, and later fueled a Bonner stretch run with another goal and two assists in the Friars’ 6-3 victory. He followed that performance by getting two assists last Thursday as Bonner completed a series sweep with a 5-4 overtime win.
“I guess because I’m a senior and because I’m a captain, when we’re down, everyone looks to me,” Hennessey said. “We’re a team, I don’t like to take things all myself, I’m not a one-man team, but we were down, 2-0, and I had to do something. In the playoffs, you have to gamble.” Hennessey led Bonner in scoring with 26 goals and 15 assists this season and is hoping to continue his career in college, at either New Hampshire College or New England College. But he has some unfinished business to take care of before he leaves Bonner.
The win over Haverford High sends the Friars into the Eastern League finals against Malvern Prep, the fourth consecutive season the two teams will play each other for the title.
“The last three years they’ve beaten us in the finals, I want more than anything to beat Malvern,” Hennessey said. “We beat them earlier in the year for the first time, and we couldn’t believe it. Malvern is a good team; they have good players; they always do. But we beat them once before, and we feel we can do it again.”
