John Schierbaum began his high school playing career with the West Chester Henderson Warriors, which was a combined program of players from both Henderson and East, but ended with the West Chester East Vikings. Schierbaum was a high-scoring converted defenseman in high school, from his normal position at forward, to extend his playing time. John excelled from his freshman year through his senior year, a gifted player with great hands and vision of the ice that seemed second to none. During his freshman year, John played sparingly at the varsity level, as the coach’s philosophy didn’t align with first-year players seeing any or much ice time playing varsity. As a sophomore, Schierbaum collected a very respectable 36 goals and 18 assists for a total of 54 points. He was second to the team’s leading scorer, Leland Newell, who had 74 points. While his overall points were lower than the team captain, John led all scorers on the team with goals. In his junior year, John posted 55 goals and 42 assists for a total of 97 points, leading not only his varsity squad in points, but also overall first place in the ICSHL. Schierbaum’s success earned him a spot on the ICSHL All-Area team named by sportswriter Denny Dyroff of the West Chester-based “Daily Local” newspaper. His senior year was a little crazy to say the least. John went back-to-back as the league and his team’s leading scorer with 42 goals and 27 assists for a total of 69 points. Not only did he make the All-Area team again, he was also cordially invited by Joe Moderski, and Bruce Craig to play in the ICSHL All-Star game at the Philadelphia Spectrum (below). And not to outdo his spectacular accomplishments, Schierbaum was the Daily Local Athlete of the Year for 1988.

During his final season some of his accomplishments included scoring 13 goals in two games and adding 6 assists, giving him 19 points in those two games, earning him the Daily Local’s male athlete of the week for January 25-31, 1988. Throughout the first two-thirds of the regular season, John totaled 21 goals. And in the final three games of the season, he matched that same exact number. Over three full years playing varsity, John scored 221 points, earning a membership in the 200 Points Club, and is believed to be the sole owner of this milestone for the school hockey program.

Schierbaum’s career after high school landed him in NCAA Dlll SUNY-Oswego State, playing for the Lakers. Over the course of his four-year college career, he played in 110 games and collected 59 goals and 58 assists for a total of 117 points and an average of 1.08 PPG. In Schierbaums 1990-91 season the Lakers won the NCAA Dlll (SUNYAC) Championship. In addition to that, John was named to the second team All-Conference team after the 1992-93 senior season. He later signed with the Utica Bulldogs of the Colonial Hockey League (CoHL). Schierbaum’s career was cut short due to a shoulder injury in his first season, and coincidentally, that would be his last.
