Ray Staszak played his youth and high school hockey in Lower Bucks County, outside of the Philadelphia Metropolitan area. Ray was a big strong kid who played forward for the Archbishop Ryan Raiders in their first years of existence. He later went on to play for the University of Illinois in Chicago before signing a free agent contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL. He played four games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings during the 1985–86 season. A highly touted prospect and a free agent out of college, he signed a million-dollar contract with the Red Wings, the first college free agent to do so.
