Co-coaches Gary Vetre and Frank DiGiandomenico of Archbishop Carroll’s hockey team are missing, possibly for the duration, from the second annual Flyers Cup Scholastic Championships. However, as long as the Arnold tandem remains in tact, the Patriots should defend their title in a breeze.
Last night, in the first game of a preliminary doubleheader at Penn’s Class of ’23 rink, Greg Arnold received his first taste of coaching and his brother, Jeff, a sophomore, contributed five goals and two assists as Carroll hammered Bishop Egan, 10-3.
No one is eager to reveal the exact reason for the suspensions of Vetre and DiGiandomenico, but we can say for sure that the Patriots were guilty of “over-celebrating” last week when they defeated Haverford High for the Inter-County League title. “I’d like to do this all the time,” bubbled Greg Arnold, the Patriots’ star in 1979.
“I’ve been a captain for three different teams, so I know what it takes to lead. Tonight, I liked the idea of giving out orders instead of taking them. “I always wished I could play with Jeff, but it never happened. I was kind of worried that he might not listen to me, but I guess my coaching agreed with him. People say that we have the same style. It’s hard for me to say.”
Aside from Arnold, Carroll’s assault was paced by Pat Marra (3 goals, 1 assist), Phil Chamness (1 goal, 7 assists) and Frank Burdo (1 goal, 1 assist).
“There was a rumor going around that Greg would coach us, but no official statement,” Jeff said. “I really didn’t have a chance to get used to the idea. I just went out and played and hoped that everything would turn out for the best.
“Beforehand, I thought I wouldn’t feel comfortable. But I changed my mind as time went on.” Last year, Jeff Arnold spent most of
his time feeding scoring machine Scott Chamness. Now, most of his goals come on passes from Scott’s brother, Phil.
“Last year was fun,” Jeff said. “But scoring goals is pretty cool, too.”
In the second game, Haverford bested German- town Academy, 6-4, as Joe McKay scored two goals, including the game-winner at 12:28 of the third period.
Tonight, Carroll meets Germantown Academy at 7 p.m. with Haverford-Egan to follow. Next Monday, Egan meets G.A. at 7 with Carroll – Haverford to follow.
A week from tomorrow at 8:15, the two teams with the best records in the round-robin will meet for the championship. All games will be played at Penn.
