This is the time of year Tom Scattolino loves. The weather is cold, and the ponds are frozen solid, which means the St. James senior can begin playing the sport he enjoys, ice hockey. Ever since Scattolino was 6 years old, he has been skating on frozen ponds with a hockey stick in his hands. The years of practice have helped him gain a roster spot on this season’s Eastern High School Hockey League All-Star team.
With performances such as last week’s game against Episcopal Academy, Scattolino is proving that he was a worthy selection to the all-star squad that will play all-stars from the Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League tomorrow night at the Skatium in Havertown.
He scored 4 goals in the game against the Churchmen to help St. James to a surprising 6-6 tie. The victory was surprising because the Bulldogs have an 0-9-1 record and Episcopal is 5-3-2. “As the captain, I try to motivate the guys to play better, but it’s tough because our team is so young,” Scattolino said..
Last year, Scattolino broke an ankle in the team’s fourth game, limiting his effectiveness. But in nine games thus far this season, the forward has scored 15 goals and assisted on 10 others, giving him 25 points.

Despite the losing record, head coach Tony Pistoria can see his team about to turn itself around, and he points to Scattolino as the catalyst.”He’s like a battery in a car, he starts the whole team, and the team is beginning to get where it should be at this point in the season,” Pistoria said.
