Zach Hafer played forward for the Haverford High hockey team last season and scored 10 goals as the team won the Tier III Flyers Cup and state championship. Only five players are back from that team that won 20 games last season, and coach Andy Rolli has had to do some improvising. One of his moves was to switch Hafer from forward to center. If the rest of his maneuvering is as successful, the Fords might be headed for a return trip to states. Hafer scored two goals to rally Haverford to a 3-3 tie with Upper Darby last Thursday. His second goal came with just 2 minutes, 40 seconds left in the game.
The effort by Hafer was no surprise to Rolli. He has coached Hafer for almost 10 years, starting at the club level with the Haverford Hawks.
“Even though the change of position sometimes means a change of philosophy, he can handle it,” Rolli said.
Hafer is 6 feet, 2 inches, and 180 pounds, deceptively fast and a more-than-adequate stick handler. “He has worked hard on his skating over the summer,” Rolli said. The work ethic on the ice is not unusual for Hafer, who is an outstanding student and also the Fords’ No. 1 tennis player. Chuck Newman
