IT’S TOUGH TO SKATE AROUND THIS RINK
In the year of the defenseman, ice hockey coaches were in
agreement that Council Rock’s Tim Rink was the
best.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
NEWTOWN – The high school ice hockey coaches of Lower Bucks County were defensive about their nominations for the second annual Golden Team this year. In a sport where the guys who put the puck in the net naturally draw the most attention, the area’s coaches were adamant about promoting the defensive side of the game and the players who kept the puck away from their own goal rather than in their opponent’s. In this, the year of the defenseman, no player dominated more from the blue line than Council Rock’s Tim Rink, the Courier Times Player of the Year. “He’s the best player in the league,” said Rock coach Paul Gilligan. “He’s the best defenseman; he’s big (5-10, 180), strong, smart, vicious; he has a terrific shot, can skate with the puck. He controls the game from his position.” Rink’s main task throughout the season was to stop the other team’s top scorers. He did his job very well.
The Indians won their second straight Suburban High School Hockey League playoff title by defeating high-powered Germantown Academy two games to one in the finals. “His job is to neutralize

other teams’ best players along with Frank Jannotta (Rink’s defensive partner),” Gilligan said. “Against GA the first time, they had a bad game, and we lost. If they play badly, we’re not going to win.” With each of Rock’s top offensive players missing time at various points of the season due to injuries, Rink was the glue that held everybody else together.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Eric Tye | Archbishop Wood Vikings
WARMINSTER – Some people don’t have this many good things happen in their lifetimes. Archbishop Wood coach Eric Tye packed it all into a few months. In September, he took over as coach of his alma mater, Archbishop Wood (Class of “89). It’s his first head coaching job. Within weeks, the Vikings went from last year’s league cellar dweller to 8-0-1 in their first nine games. With the team fighting for a Tier I playoff spot, Tye became a father after the birth of his daughter on Jan. 20. By mid-February, Tye’s Vikings had clinched a playoff berth, their first in Tier I since the coach was a senior at Wood. Although Wood lost to eventual champion Council Rock in the semis, the job Tye did just to get his team there is worthy of the Courier Times Coach of the Year award. “We put a whole new attitude into the team,” he said. “I don’t know if the players were under the impression they couldn’t win before. We just started a positive attitude with them.”
