Scoring and hitting
Conwell-Egan’s Joe Roe had what he would call a fun day in his team’s 6-3 Class AA President’s Cup semifinal hockey victory over Central Bucks East last Thursday. It was more than just his team’s victory. And more, too, than his role in it he contributed three goals and an assist. It was also his chance to throw his body around, all 5 feet, 6 inches of it.
“He plays much bigger than his size,” said Conwell-Egan coach Rich Slack.
With less than three minutes left in the game, Roe pinned a 6-3 defender in East’s end, won control of the puck, and blindly dumped an assist to teammate Drew Bowden for a goal.
“I just like to play hard, go out and have some fun,” Roe said. “I like to score… and whenever I get a chance, I like to hit somebody.” Conwell-Egan’s victory enabled the Class AA defending state champions (19-7-2 overall) to reach the President’s Cup final, where the Eagles beat Malvern Prep on Monday, 9-1, to advance to Saturday’s state championship game for the second straight season. Roe’s role in the last several games has been crucial to the team’s late-season success.
“He has just stepped up and really made the team go,” Slack said. “He was on fire.”
Roe, a junior who has scored more than 40 points this season, has played since his freshman year. His hat trick in the semifinals was his third of the season.
“He’s just starting to come out of his shell,” Slack said. “He’s starting to take it to another level. He’s going to be a real team leader next year.”
