Last season is better forgotten by most members of the Conestoga ice hockey club, which struggled to only a four-win season after having to forfeit three games because a player was ruled ineligible.
The first part of the current season wasn’t too promising, either. The Pioneers began slowly, trying to find the right line combinations and power-play unit.
But Conestoga, led by senior captain Eric Stagnaro, appears to have things together now, winning two games last week to match its entire win total of the 1990-91 season.
Stagnaro, a 5-foot, 9-inch senior, scored 6 goals and assisted on 4 others in last week’s wins over Carroll and Methacton, and he now centers the No. 1 line, which also includes co-captain Mike Budd and right winger Mike Carpentier, and plays regularly on the power play.
“Pound for pound, nobody gives more effort than Eric,” Conestoga coach Bob DiRico said. “His skating is a thing of beauty, and he has a really nice shot and a great feel for the game.”
Some college scouts have noticed. Stagnaro said he would love to continue to play the game beyond high school.
“I have no doubt he has the ability to play with a major program,” DiRico said of Stagnaro.
