It took a few games for him to become adjusted to being Germantown Academy’s No. 1 goalie, but once he settled in, Mike Marino was nearly unbeatable.
The senior led the Patriots to an 18-7-2 record and the finals of the Class AAA Flyers Cup. “It was my first year starting, and I needed the first half of the season just to get feeling good about being on the ice all the time,” Marino said. “The more games I played, the better I felt.”
Marino’s save percentage was better than 90. He had four shutouts, including two in the playoffs.
“Mike was playing good hockey the first half up to Christmas, adequate but not great,” Patriots coach John Ioia said. “But since we came back from Christmas break, he has played absolutely fantastically.”
Marino, who plans to major in marine biology in college, started playing goalie as a fifth grader.
“Honestly, I like the pressure; it doesn’t really bother me,” Marino said. “I like getting a lot of action, and I like knowing you can make or break
games.”
Marino is not done with his netminding duties. He has returned to his post as the Patriots’ lacrosse
goalie.
