At age 5, Bill Swahl put on a pair of skates to try out for a league composed of 5 to 7-year-olds called the Mites. The Monsignor Bonner senior remembers the incident well. “I could hardly stand up because my skates were two sizes too big. So my parents bought me a new pair. I used them to move up through the Pee-Wees, the Squirts, and the Midget leagues,” Swahl said. Today, after his family moved to Delaware County from the Boston area at the beginning of his junior year, Swahl is a member of Monsignor Bonner’s ice hockey team.
The Friars have reached the second round of playoff action in the Eastern High School Hockey League after finishing in third place in the EHSHL.
Swahl has been a main contributor in building Bonner’s record to 12-7-2 as he leads the team in scoring with 14 goals and 30 assists for 44 points while playing defense.
Last year, Swahl, who is hoping to attend Villanova University, was a forward for the Friars. However, head coach Ted Dolan said, “I switched him to a defenseman because he just controls the game back there for me.”
