Being one of the best ice hockey goalies in Phoenix wasn’t enough for Travis Sinden. Then again, that’s like being the best baseball player in Kenya. “Hockey’s not big there,” Sinden said of Arizona. “I wanted to play somewhere I could be seen.”
When teammate Eddie Klimas’ father got transferred to Downingtown, Sinden, a sophomore, decided to follow. He had played in a national tournament in King of Prussia the year before and was introduced to Whippets coach John Kincade.
“Travis wanted to come east to play,” Kincade said. “Now he’s living with the family of Mark Sandstrom, one of our defensemen.”
Sinden has been the backbone of the 18-6 Whippets, racking up a .921 save percentage. Sinden was recently named the Eastern High School Hockey League rookie of the year.
Last Wednesday, in the quarterfinals of the Flyers Cup tournament, Sinden had 41 saves in the Whippets’ 3-0 win over La Salle.
“The kid is extremely talented,” Kincade said. “He’s a tremendous competitor and a man of few words. The opportunities for Travis are endless.”
“It hasn’t been that tough moving,” Sinden said. “Except for school. It’s a little tougher here.” Steve Wartenberg
