Unionville ice hockey standout Dave Weaver knows his strengths and weaknesses on the ice.
“Shooting is my biggest asset,” the senior said. “I don’t have the hardest shot, but I’m accurate.”
This season, Weaver scored 49 goals to lead the Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League.
Weaver’s weakness is his skating. “I don’t have very good form. I’m just not a very good natural skater,” Weaver conceded.
To correct this flaw, Weaver has been taking skating lessons from a figure skater. He wears his hockey skates and works on his form.
“I’m still not a good skater, but I’m improving,” Weaver said.
This season, Weaver helped lead the Indians to the league championship. Tonight, they will play Monsignor Bonner in the semifinals of the Flyers’ Cup.
Weaver also runs cross-country and track for the Indians, plays drums in the school band, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
This fall, he plans to attend Exeter, a prep school in New Hampshire. “Dave is the kind of kid every coach wants,” ice hockey coach Mack McGarry said. “He eats, sleeps, and breathes hockey.”

Weaver and teammate Kurt Shotzberger are assistant coaches to McGarry for the Chester County Atoms, an age-group (6-8 years) team. “They are great with the kids,” McGarry said. “They’re the kids’ idols, and a lot of them come to watch our games and see Coach Dave and Coach Kurt play.”
