The high school ice hockey season got underway last week, and if the play of Scott Chamness of Archbishop Carroll is any indication, it will be a wild, high- scoring season.
Chamness, 15, a sophomore who plays right wing for Carroll, scored eight goals and had five assists last Thursday in his team’s opening game, in which Carroll devastated Bishop Kenrick, 20-2. Tuesday, Chamness scored five goals and added four assists as Carrol defeated Upper Merion, 14-1. For those performances, Scott Chamness has been selected as the Inquirer’s Athlete of the Week.
Dave Callaghan, Carroll’s ice hockey coach, doesn’t mince words in describing Chamness’ ability. “He has a dynamite shot,” he said. “He is an extremely hard shooter, and he can score from anywhere. In my opinion, he is one of the top puck handlers in the league. Chamness, who started as a freshman for Carroll and scored 47 goals in 18 games, has been playing organized hockey for 10 years, but he said the experience he gets in varsity competition in the Inter-County Scholastic League has made the big difference in his scoring ability. “My shot really came around last year,” Chamness said. “I was able to put in a lot of practice last season and my game really improved.”

Scoring, however, requires team play, and Chamness credits much of his success to Greg Arnold, a teammate for 10 years. The two can play with the kind of precision that develops only after years of skating together. “He is great. You can always depend on Greg,” said Chamness. “He is always there when you need him. He knows where I like to shoot from, and he knows where I am usually at when we are moving down ice.”
