Malvern forward Matt Mulhern scored six goals in a win over St. James last Thursday, then came back with a pair in a 6-2 win over Downingtown on Friday. The eight goals gave him 21 for the season.
In making a big contribution, Mulhern seems to be carrying on a family tradition in ice hockey.
Matt Mulhern’s oldest brother, Robbie, was a big-hitting forward for Malvern three years ago and now plays for New Hampshire College. Brother Ryan was on the 1990 Eastern League champion Malvern team that lost in the Flyers Cup final. He is in school at Canterbury, Conn., and is hoping to play at Brown.
Now comes Matt, a 5-foot, 10-inch, 145-pound forward, who seems to combine some of the toughness of Robbie and some of the shooting ability of Ryan.

“He is a lot like Ryan in his skating style,” said Malvern assistant coach Monte Lewis, who is trying to help guide the Friars to a seventh straight league title. “He is a finesse player, but he will go into the corners like Robbie used to do.
“He has great hands and can really shoot the puck. He has a sixth sense, and he really knows what to do when he gets into open ice.”
Matt, only a sophomore, has higher ambitions than his brothers. He would like to play at Providence or Boston College, two major college programs. When he leaves Malvern, however, there might not be a void. David Mulhern, the youngest brother, is now playing on the junior varsity at Haverford Middle School. “I think he’s going to be the best of all of us,” Matt Mulhern said.
