Even the most dominant teams sometimes need someone to step up and take charge, and that’s what senior defenseman Mark Sakers did for the Malvern Prep ice hockey team last week.
Once again this year, the Friars are the dominant team in the suburbs. At 16-0, they are well on their way to a fifth straight Flyers Cup championship. But when they faced Cardinal O’Hara Feb. 4, it was without defensemen Joe Washco, who had a broken wrist, and Mike Opdenaker, who was suspended for fighting. Sakers picked up the slack with 3 goals and 2 assists as Malvern won, 7-3.
For the season, the senior defenseman has 15 goals and 12 assists, but scoring isn’t really his forte. Sakers and his fellow defenseman have teamed with goalie Chris Dempsey to form what is once again the most impregnable defense in the Eastern League. Through Tuesday, the Friars had allowed just 18 goals to opponents. They had scored 166.
