Scott Chamness, the Maurice Richard of Philadelphia high school hockey, personally laid waste to still another opponent last night in the Flyers Cup at the Class of ’23 Rink.
Chamness has averaged an incredible four goals a game over his storied four-year career at Archbishop Carroll and once registered 13 in one game. So his four goals and two assists were but a routine devastation for him in Carroll’s 8-4 rout of Archbishop Ryan. Carroll (21-4-1), from the more highly regarded Inter-County League, had been generally considered the favorite, but Ryan (now 21-1) came in undefeated as Lower Bucks County champions. A Raider four-goal eruption in the second period (three within less than two minutes) sent Carroll into the final period surprisingly in arrears 4-3.
But carried by Chamness, along with big goals by Jeff Arnold and Frank Burdo, the Patriots countered with five straight goals of their own to capture the game. “They had some firepower,” Chamness said. “They got four straight goals against us, and only Radnor ever did that before. “We were trying to make the pretty play, instead of shooting. We talked it over between peri- ods. We knew we needed the break up the middle. We got a couple of two-on-ones, and it worked. When we score once, we explode.”An explosion that after two gallant periods finally blew up Ryan.
