North Penn senior Larry Wendler wants to play Division I ice hockey, so the Knights’ captain went to coach Dave Culp at the beginning of the season and asked if he could be shifted from offense to defense.
“I want to be an all-around player,” Wendler said. “And colleges want players who can do everything. I like scoring, but I think I would rather set up a goal than score one.”
Wendler did his share of scoring Friday night in North Penn’s 8-0 Inter-County League victory over Lower Merion. Wendler scored 3 goals, including 2 short-handed, and had 3 assists.
“Larry has the ability to carry the puck end to end and score,” Culp said.
“He has tremendous speed and can handle the puck extremely well.
“Larry isn’t real big, but he can check.”
Wendler said he has been contacted by the University of Denver and the University of North Dakota, two of the better Division I schools.
“I’ll do almost anything to get into a good school,” Wendler said. “Except, maybe, goalie. I don’t ever think I could be a goalie.”
