The Chamness Brothers are not like the Doobie Brothers. Their act has been of short duration. “I’ve only played with Phil the last two years,” said Scott Chamness. “We’ve always been two years apart.” Since Scott is a senior at Archbishop Carroll, and the last game of his scholastic career will be tomorrow night, the Chamness Brothers seem destined to be as brief an attraction as the Smothers Brothers television show. But last night the Chamness Brothers kept Carroll in the Flyers Cup with a 7-3 win over Malvern Prep at Penn’s Class of 1923 Rink. Phil had two goals and two assists and Scott had three goals and two assists as Carroll evened the championship series at one game each. The two teams will meet for the Cup at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Penn. “He (Phil) doesn’t always get the credit for some of the stuff he does, but without him, we might not even be here,” Scott said after running his goal total to 10 in three Cup games so far. “We really need him.”
Phil doesn’t get credit, because he (like everyone else on Carroll) is lost in Scott’s enormous shadow. “Scott’s set a lot of records and gotten a lot of publicity,” said Phil, a sophomore. “It’s always in the back of your mind. You get a little jealous, sure, especially when a neighbor or somebody asks, ‘Who’s Phil Chamness?’

“There may never be another Scott Chamness, but I’m sure gonna give it a shot. Jeff Arnold (a freshman who centers for the Chamness Brothers) and I plan to stay around and set a few records of our own.” Arnold scored the game’s first goal on an assist by Phil, and Phil scored on a power play 10 minutes later, giving Carroll a 2-0 lead after one period. Scott lanelli’s short-handed breakaway after stealing the puck from Phil Chamness cut the Carroll lead to 2-1 in the second period. But Arnold scored his second goal, on a power play, two minutes later. Scott Chamness made it 4-1 late in the second period on one of his usual meteorites from the right point. When Scott scored a short-handed goal just 35 seconds into the final period, Carroll was cruising, 5-1. Al Washco got it back for Malvern on that same power play, but Phil’s unassisted goal raised Carroll’s margin to 6-2 mid-way through the period and the game was over. Malvern’s Mike O’Connor and Scott Chamness traded goals later in the period for the final scoring.
