Mt. Lebanon outskates Churchill
Mt. Lebanon won its rematch with Churchill, 4-2, after losing the WPIHL championship game to the Chargers, 3-0, a week ago. This is the second year for the AA playoffs with Baldwin winning the state title last year while the A championship game was in its first year. Churchill seemed to tire in the game, its third in 27 hours. For Mt. Lebanon, Bob McArthur scored twice, once to open the game and the other to end it with an unassisted goal and only 12 seconds remaining. Mark DeGiovanni and Shawn Gallaway scored the other two Blue Devil goals. Churchill got both goals from Toby Ritner as the Chargers found the going a little rougher than a week ago. The cause for this was the return of Mt. Lebanon goalie Rich Cunningham who was out with an injury for six weeks. Cunningham was the AA’s MVP for his performance. The winning Abington goal barely overshadowed a brilliant show by Gateway’s sophomore stud, John Laprando, who had one goal and two assists for the Class A MVP trophy. Laprando’s goal came with just 16 seconds left in the game and sent it into overtime. Laprando came streaking down ice with the puck and let a bullet fly from just inside the faceoff circle that beat the goaltender in the upper right corner of the net. Tom Miller and Frank Crnic assisted on the goal.
