Council Rock advanced to the Tier II state championship game as the Indians won a best-of-three Presidents Cup series against Malvern Prep last week. Rock won the opening game, 10-6, last Monday; lost the next night, 8-4, and won the final game on Thursday, 9-1. ”I really got the feeling that the seniors wanted to win in the last game,” said Council Rock coach Paul Gilligan. “They had gotten over the disappointment of losing to William Tennent in the league finals, and it helped that we were playing Malvern. “Three of the toughest losses that those kids had during their years at Council Rock were games we lost to Malvern. It was great for the seniors that we could beat them and advance to the next game.” Seniors scored all the goals in the 9-1 clincher at the Grundy Rink. Eric Kratchwell led the assault with three goals, Scott Wackowski and Ross Porubski each scored twice, and Bob Williams and Rich Schwab each scored single goals. Rock dominated the game, registering a 40-24 advantage in shots on goal. “We wanted to defend the Tier I state championship, but Tennent changed those plans,” said Gilligan. “We’ll have to settle for trying to win the Tier II division.” Council Rock was to play Johnstown yesterday for the title. The team traveled to Pittsburgh in a bus rented from the Flyers. “With the [National Hockey League) strike, the Flyers didn’t need the bus,” said Gilligan. “It didn’t come cheap [$1,500), but we’re glad to have it.
