The outstanding brother goaltending combination of Joe and Michael Richter heads the sixth Inquirer all-Southeastern Pennsylvania hockey team. The Richters helped Germantown Academy to the Flyers Cup and a 28-1 record this past season. They were aided by forward J. J. Reydel and defenseman Charley Wurts, who also are honored today as part of a team chosen with the aid of area hockey officials. Joe Richter is a repeat selection, along with forwards Derek Lynch and Ed Romanowski of St. James, Bob Lawrence of Bishop Egan and Phil Chamness of Archbishop Carroll, and defensemen Doug Bowman of West Chester and Rob Walker of William Tennent. Tim Brosious of Lower Merion, who made the team as a defenseman last year, made it as a forward this time. The Richters are one of the few brother combinations ever honored simultaneously by The Inquirer in any sport. They are friends and rivals, but the rivalry has always been subdued. “We try not to even kid each other,” said Joe, a senior, “because we respect each other. When Michael (a freshman) was younger, he used to ask me things, but he didn’t really have to do that anymore. Now I get as many pointers from him as he does from me.” But Joe got one thing from Mike recently that not only gave him a boost, it helped give Germantown Academy the Flyers Cup. Coach Bruce Craig had started Mike in two victories in the cup playoffs. GA needed only one more to win its first regional championship. Before the game, he called the players aside to tell them who would start. “I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings,” he began, “but I have to go with the hot goaltender.” Craig looked at Michael, who was his choice to start. Michael, who is so serious about his craft that he reads a book on concentration technique prior to each start, demurred. He said that Joe, a senior who would be playing his last high school game, should get the start. Joe not only started, but he turned in the first shutout in Flyers Cup history, stopping West Chester, 5-0.
