Minutes after the inaugural Keystone State Games ended yesterday evening with its last bit of competition – a midget division ice hockey game in which the West clinched the gold medal with a 1-1 tie against an At Large team local chairperson Davies Bahr announced her intention of going home: “Today someone introduced Walt as my ex-husband. I’ve got to go home.”
Everyone’s gone home. Midget ice hockey players; adolescent field hockey players; tanned swimmers; boxers; kayakers; shooters; sky-scraping basketball players the whole athletic lot has picked up the medals and mementoes and has gone home.
A phantasmagoric athletic weekend ended yesterday on the well-worn playing fields of Penn State.
Baseball
The Mideast, composed of players from the Harrisburg area, won the gold medal yesterday by ripping the West 15-3. The Mideast finished with a 3-0 record in the round-robin tournament.
Winning pitcher Bob Beistline of Steelton and Dave Osteen, a son of former major league pitcher Claude Osteen, collected three hits and three runs batted in for the Mideast.
Randy Learish of Clearfield hurled the Midwest to the silver medal with a 14-1, four-hit win over the East. The Midwest finished with a 2-1 record.
Soccer
The West dominated both the open men’s and the scholastic boys’ competition.
In the open division yesterday the West and the East tied 2-2, but the West won the gold medal by a criteria decision. The West had a five-goal differential in its


games to a four-goal differential for the East.
In scholastic boys’ play Sean Fouts of Heidelburg scored to lead the West to a 1-0 triumph over the East, good for the gold medal.
The open women’s title went to the East with a 2-0 record.
The girls’ scholastic crown, though, went to the East, a 4-1 victor over the West yesterday.
Swimming
Tim Witham of Bellefonte continued his fine showing in the Games by taking a silver medal yesterday in the 100-meter freestyle. Damon Pietronigro of Norwin won in 58.71. No time was available for Witham.
The Bellefonte swimmer combined with Chris Gaydos, Mark Platek and Chris Meoli of the Pitt Aquatic Club to take a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
Volleyball
The Central scholastic women’s team fought its way into the finals yeaterday with a five-set win over the East only to lose the gold medal to the West in straight games 15-9, 15-8, 17-15.
The West finished the tournament with a 3-0 record.

Ice Hockey
Steve Shaver of Pittsburgh scored for the West, and Joby Bray of Paoli scored for the East in the 1-1 midget tie that gave the gold medal to the West.
The West and At Large, a team composed of players from different locations in the state, both finished with 2-1 records, but the West was awarded the gold on the number of goals scored throughout the tournament.
In the juniors competition the East won the gold medal with an 8-7 win over Central yesterday. The East finished 2-0-1, while Central finished 2-1 for the silver medal.
