With 49 seconds gone in the second period, Archbishop Carroll High school scored its third goal on the way to an easy 11-4 ice hockey win over Monsignor Bonner last month.
Goal by No. 8, Greg Arnold, the public address system blared. At 5:54 of the same period, Carroll scored again. Goal by No. 8, Greg Arnold, the announcer said. At that moment, Greg Arnold was 200 miles away attending prep school in New England. Give him an assist, maybe, but not the goal. Give the goals to Jeff Arnold. Jeff is Greg’s younger brother by two years, but in size and skating ability they’re practically twins. Jeff has only one disadvantage Greg played for Carroll first. “Everybody used to call me Greg,” says Jeff, who finished fifth in scoring in the Intercounty League as a freshman last year. “The P.A. announcer, he had the roster right in front of him and he still called me Greg. I got sick of hearing all this stuff about, ‘He can’t be as good as his brother,’ or ‘Greg this…Greg that.”
Arnold centers a line with a chronic recognition problem. Phil Chamness, brother of the famous Scott, skates on one wing. Pat Marra, brother of Tony, can be found on the other. Call them the Hand- Me-Down Line. “They’ve been overshadowed their whole careers,” says Carroll coach Gary Vetre. “They don’t want to be known for what their brothers did. This is their moment to shine.” Arnold made up his mind to keep on scoring until the P.A. announcers got it right. Last week he raked

Cardinal O’Hara for five goals and two assists in a 7-1 win, then accounted for one goal and five assists in a 7-3 victory over Methacton. That made him the league scoring leader with 21 goals and 16 assists in 10 games. It also made him The Inquirer’s Suburban Athlete of
the Week. Best of all, the P.A. system gave the goals to Jeff Arnold. The 200- mile-long shadow was fading fast.
