Scott Chamness shrugged off the effects of a separated left shoulder and the weariness of three days of tournament play with the Midget Flyers to score seven goals and hand Archbishop Carroll a 12-3 victory over Bishop Egan last night in the first round of the Southeast Pennsylvania Regional high school hockey tournament. Chamness, just returned from the Midget Flyers’ national tournament appearance in River Rouge, Mich., scored three goals in each of the first two periods and a final goal in the third period as Carroll gained the easy win at the Skatium in Havertown. In other first-round games in the double-elimination tournament, Radnor beat Germantown Academy, 6-4, at the Skatium; Archbishop Ryan downed Malvern Prep, 7-1, at Grundy Arena in Bristol; and William Tennent edged Archbishop Wood, 1-0, at the Face-Off Circle in Warminster. Tonight’s matchups send Archbishop Wood against Malvern Prep at 7 at Lafayette Gardens in King of Prussia, followed by Archbishop Carroll-Radnor at 8:45; William Tennent against Archbishop Ryan at 8:15 at the Face-Off Circle; and Bishop Egan against Germantown Academy at 8:45 at Grundy Arena. Radnor got two goals apiece from Jay Wick and Jeff White in the 6-4 win that set up its game with Archbishop Carroll. Radnor finished second behind Archbishop Carroll in the Inter-County League, a fact that’s still heavy on the mind of Radnor Coach Jack Moten. “It’s been difficult to bring them in because they were so ‘up’ for the league finals,” he said. “We had an inkling that we might beat Carroll, but we couldn’t climb the mountain. So it was tough to get them ‘up’ now. Radnor won last night despite building only a 26-23 shot advantage and a three-goal performance by Germantown Academy’s Charlie Wertz. Meantime, Steve Engle and Kevin Emore scored two goals apiece in Archbishop Ryan’s rout of Malvern Prep. Goaltender Jim Kochersperger recorded the shutout and Wayne Dundin scored the lone goal for William Tennent, the suburban champion.
