Archbishop Carroll Patriots, Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Hockey Tournament Champions

It was a rough day for William Tennent’s ice hockey team in Pennsylvania High School Eastern Regional playoffs at the Face-Off Circle in Warminster on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers came ever so close to knocking off Inter-County League powerhouse Archbishop Carroll but lost 5-4 on a goal by sophomore Greg Arnold with just :32 seconds remaining in regulation.

GAME SUMMARY:

The loss was the second in two attempts for Tennent in the tournament. One that will send three teams to the Pennsylvania State Championships at State College, April 14-16. Still, the Panthers have a reasonable chance of being one of those three teams should Lower Bucks County League runner-up Bishop Egan fall (as expected) to Chestnut Hill Academy in a game Tuesday. Then all Tennent would have to do to become one of two Class AA representatives would be to defeat Egan at the Face-Off Circle on Thursday night (7pm). Abington has already clinched the other Class AA spot while Archbishop Carroll, with several members from the Little Flyers, is expected to be the Class AAA representative of the region at the tournament. Carroll’s sophomore center, Greg Arnold, scored his fourth goal of the gamin in the last minute of play to power the Patriots past the William Tennent Panthers. All were scored on the power plays, as was Carroll’s other goal, by sophomore Bruce Wouthers. Tennent’s Steve Brown had an exceptional game on defense for the losers and contributed two goals to the Tennent attack. John Buzzard, and Ken Lanzetta scored the other two goals for the Panthers. “We really played Carroll tough,” Tennent coach Rich Boerner said. “Carroll was supposed to be the class of the Inter-County league – head and shoulders above everybody else. The thing people are learning about this tournament, though, is that there is very little difference between our league and theirs.”
