1982 Brothers team up as hockey all-stars

April 11, 1982 The outstanding brother goaltending combination of Joe and Michael Richter heads the sixth Inquirer all-Southeastern Pennsylvania hockey team. The Richters helped Germantown Academy to the Flyers Cup and a 28-1 record this past season. They were aided by forward J. J. Reydel and defenseman Charley Wurts, who also are honored today as part of a team chosen with the aid of area hockey officials. Joe Richter is a repeat selection, along with forwards Derek Lynch and Ed Romanowski of St. James, Bob Lawrence of Bishop Egan and Phil Chamness of Archbishop Carroll, and defensemen Doug Bowman of West Chester and Rob Walker of William Tennent. Tim Brosious of Lower Merion, who made the team as a defenseman last year, made it as a forward this time. April 7, 1994 Germantown Academy broke open the Flyers Cup final with four goals in the third period. HAVERTOWN – Haverford High’s hockey season ended in disappointment last night as Germantown Academy skated to a 5-2 victory at the Skatium to win the Flyers Cup championship in Tier I. Germantown Academy dominated the third period in the third and final game of the series, breaking a 1- 1 tie with four straight goals.”The effort was there from beginning to end, but there was that momentary lapse in the third period and that was the difference,” said Fords coach Andy Rolli, whose team ended the season 21-5-1. History is made, The Pepsi Shoot Out! Andy Abramson, the 2023 Ed Snider Award co-recipient alongside Mike Richter, has significantly elevated youth hockey’s profile in the Delaware Valley. One of his most impactful initiatives was “The Pepsi Shootout,” a televised competition series featured during intermissions of Flyers’ away games, initially on TV 29 and later on Prism. The competition, inspired by the Boston Bruin’s Mini-One-on-One, started as a shooter versus goalie penalty shot format and eventually evolved to include various formats such as 3 on 2, 2 on 1, and 1 on 1, catering to youth hockey teams of all levels, from Mites to Juniors and also High School teams from across the Delaware Valley area. April 11, 1983 The highest-scoring player in Southeastern Pennsylvania and the best goaltending prospect to play in this region highlight The Inquirer’s 1983 all-area hockey team. Vince McNamee, who scored 112 goals for George Washington this year, and goalie Michael Richter, who led Germantown Academy to the Flyers Cup for the second straight year while only a sophomore, headline the six-player first team. Defensemen Doug Bowman of West Chester and Joe Modersky of Episcopal Academy, and forwards Bob Lawrence of Bishop Egan and Mike McGregor of Germantown Academy complete the squad.
