Bob Brody won his second straight Bobby Clarke Award last night, and Germantown Academy won its second straight Flyers Cup. The two are inextricably intertwined. Brody scored the key goal last night and GA defeated Bishop Egan, 9-5, before 1,471 fans in the University City Center. The win broke Egan’s 24-game winning streak and denied the Eagles a perfect season. More important, from GA’s standpoint, it capped a comeback from a one-game deficit created on March 21 when Egan won the first-round game between the two, 5-4, in overtime. Germantown Academy (25-3-1) will meet Baldwin of suburban Pittsburgh in the Pennsylvania Cup at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Johnstown. “I don’t know what it is with us.” said Brody, who scored nine goals in the four games. “I think we need to have our backs to the wall.” Germantown Academy never had its back more against the wall than in the first 2 minutes of last night’s sizzling final period. The Patriots had taken a 4-0 lead in the first period and appeared ready to coast home. Even though Egan played very well in the second period, the deficit narrowed only to 4-1, and GA fans already were counting down. But the fans had not counted on Egan’s Ray Alpaugh. The Lower Bucks County League’s most valuable player scored three goals in the first 2 minutes of the final period to create a 4-4 tie. “I noticed that kid last week,” said GA coach Bruce Craig, “but he didn’t scare me. I’ll tell you; he scared me tonight.”
But less than 90 seconds after Alpaugh’s hat trick had tied the game, Brody got the puck along the right boards, out by the blue line. He homed in on the net and scored before Egan goaltender Jim Kavalcık could react. “GA needed a goal,” Brody said. “We needed a goal badly. In fact, if we didn’t get a goal right then, I think it could have gone the other way. But J. J. Reydel gave me a good pass, and I was able to score.” After Brody’s goal, it was GA’s turn to streak. Rob Schlegel and Ben Wurts connected in the next 2 minutes, raising the lead to 7-4. Egan’s Bob Lawrence, perhaps the most talented individual in the cup this year, momentarily stemmed GA’s momentum by scoring his second goal. But Reydel and Brody again scored for GA to produce the final margin of 9-5. The victory was somewhat of a vindication for GA, which had gone 19-0-1 in the regular season, then lost its Suburban League final playoff series to Cherry Hill East. (New Jersey teams are not eligible for the Flyers Cup, so GA represented the Subur ban League.) Brody, whom the Patriots call “Mr. March,” recovered from a tepid regular season just in time to pick up his club. It was especially since sophomore goaltender Mike Richter was cooling off from a great regular season.
