At the time, Chamness, who was a member of the National Honor Society and an important contributor on Carroll’s football and baseball teams, was 18 years old, and his […]

1980 The best : Hockey star Scott Chamness is player of the year

June 15, 1980 When Scott Chamness skated onto the ice four years ago his first varsity hockey game for Archbishop Carroll High School, he gathered his teammates around him, and announced, “We’re gonna tear this league apart.” The league Chamness was referring to was the Inter-County Hockey league and, although nobody knew it a the time, he was right. The Inter-County League, and area hockey in general hasn’t been the same. His contributions are more than just the staggering point totals he has amassed, Chamness, more than any other player made hockey a major scholastic sport in Southeastern Pennsylvania. That may seem an overstatement. He is, after all, an 18-year old just one week out of high school. But Chamness created the one thing that hockey in local schools always lacked – the media interest to put the sport on a par with the established sports. When school opened in […]

Ava Thomas: The greatest girls player in Flyers Cup Tournament history

Greatness exemplified If you follow Flyers Cup History you’ll recognize the name, Scott Chamness, it’s synonymous with everything that the Flyers Cup Tournament was meant to be, became, and has always been. Scott “The Shot”, as he was referred to earned the nickname because of his blazing hard, and pinpoint-accurate shot. It didn’t matter if it was the slapshot, wrister, or snapshot as they were equally as hard and of the utmost precision. The great Don Mckee, writer, and former Philadelphia Inquirer sports columnist coined the term in the late seventies when the high school post-season tournament was known as the Eastern Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship a few years before the inaugural Flyers Cup Tournament in 1980. Scott helped shape the tournament bringing high school varsity ice hockey into the same discussion as other area sports like football and basketball. Scott was the student face of the game back […]
