The 1978 Abington Ghosts won the Suburban High School Hockey League championship beating William Tennent in the best-of-three SHSHL series 7-4 in game one, and 6-5 after double overtime in game two. However, they did not win the Eastern Regional High School Ice Hockey Championship. The Archbishop Carroll Patriots beat William Tennent to win the first-ever tournament final, the predecessor to what is commonly known as “The Flyers Cup Tournament” today.
Here’s where it gets weird. The Ghosts were selected to play in the Pennsylvania Cup Ice Hockey Championship as Class AA representatives for the East versus the West’s AA representative from the Pittsburgh region. This after losing regionals to Chestnut Hill Academy, There were supposed to be three teams from each division the AA and the AAA. The winner of the Eastern Regional Championship was by default the Class AAA representative, which was Archbishop Carroll, however, they decided to back out of the championship game due to their star players being unable to make the trip to the big game because of Little Flyers obligations to play in a tournament scheduled for the same weekend, Saturday, April 14. Sadly the decision by Carroll’s coach, Dave Callahan, ruined the opportunity for the rest of the Patriots team who would have been able to play. Nevertheless, this decision created another opportunity for the Ghosts as they were asked by the Pennsylvania Cup committee to play up a class at AAA in order to compete against the Erie McDowell Trojans. And this is where history was made for the Ghosts squad as they went on to beat the McDowell Trojans by a score of 6-5 in the second of highest goals elimination play handing Abington their first-ever Pennsylvania state ice hockey title. Abington lost the first game to McDowell but the elimination play calls for whoever winds up with most goals after two games, win or lose is crowned champion.
