Malvern Prep skated to a 5-3 victory over Conestoga Thursday night at the Havertown Skatium to win the Flyers Cup scholastic ice hockey championship. On Saturday, Malvern will skate against the winner of the Penguins Cup from the Pittsburgh area for the state championship at the Face Off Circle rink in Warminster.

The Friars, who lost to Conestoga in last year’s championship contest, were led by Jeff Spencer, who netted two goals, and Steve Kinsley, the tournament’s most valuable player, who was credited with a goal and two assists. It was sweet revenge for Malvern, which lost last year’s Flyers Cup in the championship game and which, two weeks ago, lost its bid for an undefeated season in a 4-2 defeat to Conestoga. The Friars ended the tournament with an accumulated record of 24-1, while Conestoga finished at 23-2-1. Skating before a crowd of 1,200, Malvern came out playing furious hockey, physically overpowering the Pioneers with hard checking and jumping to a 3-0 lead in the opening period.

Kinsley scored first for the Friars 4:13 into the game. He converted a Matt Lannen pass from the corner, beating Conestoga goaltender Scott Graham on a low shot from the slot. “They came out playing physical hockey, and it was the smart thing to do against us,” said Conestoga coach Taylor Railton. “They were fired up and played with more intensity than we did. They were beating us physically, and beating us to the puck in our end. We just couldn’t handle them.” Spencer scored the first of his two goals of the night with just under 3 minutes remaining in the period, beating Graham high on his glove side to make it 2-0. Chick Kelly assisted on the goal. The Friars pushed the lead to 3-0 in the period’s final minute on a score from Mike Tordone, assisted by Jim Moore and Kinsley. In the second period, the Friars extended the lead to 4 goals on a score by Al Tedesco before defenseman Geordie Shaw scored a power play goal to put Conestoga on the board. Shaw broke down the middle of the offensive zone and took a centering pass from John Parisi, then beat Friars goalie Mike Longo low to make the game 4-1.

The Pioneers had a pair of two-man advantages on Malvern penalties later in the period, but the solid play of defensemen Jim Moore and Dan Kelly, along with some superb saves by Longo, held the Pioneers scoreless. “That really hurt us,” said Railton. “We needed to get closer in the second period, but Longo made some key saves for Malvern.” Doug Smink narrowed the margin to 4-2 with a goal early in the final period, but Spencer’s second tally of the night again pushed Malvern into a cushioned 5-2 lead. With 4 seconds remaining in the game, Conestoga’s Shaw scored his second goal of the game on a slap shot from the point, but it was too little too late and a meaningless goal as seconds later Malvern was celebrating its 5-3 victory and Flyers Cup championship. “We just had to go out and take it to them,” Friar coach Tom Egan said. “Our kids played hard and checked hard, and for once our defense played a superb game.” Longo recorded 19 saves in the contest for Malvern, while Conestoga goalie Graham was credited with 15 saves. Kinsley was awarded the Bobby Clarke Trophy as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Malvern captain proved to be the offensive catalyst for the Friars throughout postseason play and led all scorers in the Flyers Cup tournament with six goals and three assists. In winning the award, Kinsley will receive a pair of skates, along with a two-week scholarship to the Philadelphia USA hockey school this summer.
