“Four seconds left… four seconds,” said Johnstown coach Vern Campigotto, covering his face with both hands in the moments after his team lost the Class AA title game, 6-5, to Philadelphia Father Judge. Johnstown (22-2-1) mounted an impressive four-goal comeback in the final minutes of the third period to tie the game, 5-5, but surrendered the winner to Father Judge (19-4-1) with four seconds left. “We used our top line to tie the game, and those kids were still out there for the last goal,’ said Campigotto, whose team outshot Father Judge, 31-16. “We just wanted to hold them off and take it to overtime. We could have won.”
Father Judge carried a 5-1 lead into the third period, but senior left wing Brian Bunn and sophomore center Brian Wincer each tallied twice to knot the score. Bunn’s second goal tied the game with 1:17 remaining. Father Judge’s Mike Bill whipped the rebound of a point shot past Johnstown goalie George Spisak for the winner and clinched the Lower Bucks County champion’s first state title. “I think we sat on that four-goal lead and didn’t play real smart in the third,” Father Judge coach Bill Conners said. “When they tied it, things didn’t look good for us, especially with them taking the momentum away.” The loss was especially difficult for Johnstown, the WPIHL champ. Several Johnstown players lay on the ice for minutes after the game ended, while others broke their sticks in frustration. The late goal also stunned the boisterous Johnstown crowd, by far the largest and loudest contingent attending the three games.
